【环境讲坛98期】Biphasic catalytic process: A generic platform technology for biomass conversion

报告摘要:

The market demand for renewable fuels and chemicals has surged in the past decades. However, one of the challenges of biomass conversion is that, unlike the petroleum counterpart, biomass feedstocks are diverse but there is lack of cost-effective platform technology that could convert a vast variety of biomass to desired products at a high carbon atom efficiency. Herein we have developed a “one-pot” liquid-liquid biphasic catalytic process that is used to convert relatively hydrophilic biomass feedstocks to more hydrophobic products at high carbon efficiencies. Unlike the conventional monophasic catalytic processes, in a biphasic catalytic process, water / organic biphasic solvent media are used to spatially separate different catalysts, which catalyze distinct reactions in different solvents, respectively. For demonstration, various biomass molecules including carbohydrates, lignin derived phenols, terpenoids, fatty acids and vegetable oils were converted to furan derivatives, benzene, cycloalkanes, and straight-chain alkanes, respectively, in the similar biphasic catalytic processes. We observed substantial improvements of the reaction kinetics as well as the selectivities to the corresponding products. The reaction mechanism was investigated and the understanding of the underlying physiochemical fundamentals, such as the effects of the catalyst properties, solvents, as well as the process conditions, on the conversion of the different types of biomass feedstock, were explored. We thus conclude that the biphasic catalytic process is a promising generic platform technology for biomass conversion.

报告人简介:

Dr. Hongfei Lin is an Associate Professor in the Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at Washington State University. He received his B.E and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Tsinghua University, China, and his Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from Louisiana State University, USA.  After graduation, he has been a postdoctoral fellow for two years at the University of California, Santa Barbara and then worked in renewable energy industry for three years.  He joined the faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno in 2010 and was transferred to Washington State University in 2016.  Dr. Lin’s current research focuses on catalysis and sustainability, with the emphasis on developing liquid-phase catalytic processes for production of fuels and chemicals from renewable feedstocks. He has published many scientific papers on the premier journals including Energy and Environmental Science, ACS Catalysis, Green Chemistry, ChemSusChem, etc.  He has also delivered numerous presentations in conferences and research institutions. He is the international advisory board member of Energy Technology, and the editorial board member of Advanced Composites and Hybrid Materials. He is the Programming Chair of the Energy and Fuels Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
