"Zero discharge treatment technology of POME”, which is patented by the team of Water Quality Control and Cycle, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has been shortlisted for Palm Oil Industry Award and also the Sustainable Technology Award in IChemE Malaysia Awards 2015.
There are plenty of oil palm especially in Malaysia and Indonesia. During the palm oil extraction process, about 1.5m3 of water is consumed to process one tonne of Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB), half of which results in POME. POME poses a great threat on environment for its high biological and chemical oxygen demands, when discharged untreated or partially treated into receiving watercourse. Over the past decade, many methods have been developed to control POME pollution. However, few have been put into full scale application for their unsatisfactory performance and high operating costs.
The team of Water Quality Control and Cycle has studied the POME Zero Discharge Green Technology from 2003. In 2007, this Green Technology was successfully researched and developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
On the 14th August 2009, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, MPOB and Ronser Bio-tech Bhd entered into a R&D agreement using the patented technology AnaEG and BioAX for the treatment of POME to zero discharge in a Sime Darby plantation in Labu, Seremban, provided by MPOB.
A pilot plant of 5 m3/hour was built on March 2010 and was commissioned on September 2010. The POME zero discharge system is the only system currently available in the world and uses the EGSB technology. Even the United States of America Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has visited the Labu plant on 26th of October 2012. Scaling up of AnaEG from lab scale into pilot plant, is a successful one in Labu Palm Oil Mill Effluent Zero Discharge Green Technology Centre.
On the 14th April 2015, Ronser Bio-Tech Berhad was listed as Entrepreneurial Company of the Year Wastewater Treatment in 2015 Frost & Sullivan Malaysia Excellence Awards for the “Zero discharge treatment technology of POME”. Professor Zhang Zhenjia, the leader of the team of Water Quality Control and Cycle, Attend the awards ceremony and accepted the prize.
In June 2015, Professor Zhang Zhenjia was interviewed by International business review, and made the cover of International business review, Southeast Asia
