The discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) originated from the municipal engineering program established in 1928. Experiencing the faculty changes, university relocation and discipline reorganization, SJTU established its environmental & chemical engineering master program in 1984 and its environmental science master program in 1998 by integrating some of relevant leading subjects, including mechanical & dynamic engineering, chemical engineering, life science and civil engineering. The School of Environmental Science and Engineering (SESE) was formally established in 1999 and environmental engineering doctorate program and environmental engineering master program of engineering were established in 2001 and 2002, respectively. In 2003 the first level discipline doctoral program of environmental science and engineering was approved.
Currently the school has 51 full-time faculties, including 19 full professors (including one chair professor, one Distinguished Professor of "Cheung Kong Scholar Program", one winner of China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, one selected by “National Key Talent Program”, seven selected by New Century Talents Cultivation Program of Ministry of Education), 27 associate professor (including one selected in "Thousand Young Talents Program" of the Organization Department of CPC Central Committee), All the faculty members hold doctorate degree and over 70% of current faculty members have at least one year overseas study experiences.
Orientations and Objectives:
Following SJTU’s education traditions of “higher starting point, solid foundation, strict requirements, foci on practice, and pursuing innovation”, tracing international frontiers and addressing the needs of China’s national strategies on environmental protection and sustainable development, the school targets to inculcate innovative talents who will have the international visions, innovative ideas, practical spirits and leaderships and conduct cutting-edge research projects that are fundamental, forward-looking and strategic to global progress on environmental science and technologies by adopting the mottos of “pursuing innovation, creativity, and eminence ”.
The brief introduction, advantages and special features of our discipline:
By responding national strategy on ecological civilization and environmental security, our academic research mainly focuses on water pollution treatment and control at the river basin level, regional air pollution control and treatment, solid wastes treatment and safe disposal and recovery, soil-underground water contamination repair and restoration, environmental functional materials, resource & environmental management and climate change policies, etc.
From basic research point of view, innovative methods on carbon accounting, specific sorbents for mercury capture, photo-catalyst for environmental remediation, bio-chars and pollutants removal mechanism have been proposed and applied. Faculties at SESE have undertaken 4 national key research projects, 54 normal projects and special projects for young scientists funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China during the last five years and published 554 papers in the SCI-indexed journals (including 51 papers published by Environmental Science and Technology, one of the top journals in the field of environment) since 2012. More than 10 faculties serve as the editorial board members or subject editors for different international journals (including two serving as the associate editors), leading to higher academic impact. In terms of technological innovation, many cutting-edge technologies have been incubated, including water quality maintenance technologies for highland lakes, water body pollution control and remediation, technologies on mercury abatement from industrial flue gases, environmental protection equipment and waste reclamation and resourcization, soil and underground water contamination removal technologies, zero emission technologies for palm oil based wastewater, etc. These technologies have been successfully applied in Erhai lake of Yunnan province, Malaysia’s palm oil firms, Tashilhunpo Monastery in Tibet, and Disney Resort in Shanghai, etc.
Talent cultivation targets:
By responding national requests on cultivating environmental talents with board knowledge foundation and interdisciplinary background and combining with SJTU’s advantageous disciplines, the school paid more attentions on fostering our students to think independently and improve their practical abilities. Especially, special cares have been made so that our students can enhance their international visions and global perspectives, as well as improving their awareness on social responsibilities and contributing to the societies. We expect that our graduates can deal with different environmental issues at the regional, river basin, city and corporate levels with solid knowledge on treating wastewater, air, solid wastes and other pollutants. We also expect that they can work in the governmental agencies, academia, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or companies so that their potentials can be fully utilized.
Domestic and international impacts:
The environmental discipline at SJTU has a long history. By integrating the comprehensive advantages of SJTU’s academic development, the discipline of environmental science and engineering has experienced a rapid development during the last decade and received international recognition. The discipline of environment & ecology was ranked among the top 1% globally in 2011. The discipline of environmental science has been ranked among the top 100 (from 51 to 100) by QS since 2012. And the discipline of environmental science and engineering was chosen as the first class discipline (Type B) by the Shanghai Municipal Government in 2013.
Responding national requests by solving key environmental problems:
Key research projects that our faculties undertook include Major Science and Technology Project of Water Pollution Control and Management in China, National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 program), National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program) and key research projects funded by Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. These projects provided complete solutions to key environmental issues and made great contributions to national economic construction and social development. By collaborating with local companies a joint information center on e-wastes collection and treatment was established. Also, as one initiator, the school helped the establishment of Shanghai garbage and water alliances.
Especially, our research outcomes have made great contributions to protecting Erhai river basin, treating wastewater with higher organic concentrations, and recovering valuable metals from waste electronic and electric equipment. These achievements provide technological support to solve China’s major environmental issues and promote the country’s sustainable development, receiving national leaders’ confirmation and appraisals. For instance, both President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang highly commented our water project in Erhai.
Participating in international competition and increasing international influence:
Several key technologies, including the zero emission technology for treating palm oil-based wastewater, have been applied outside China, such as in Malaysia. Particularly, this zero emission technology has been certified by the Institution of Chemical Engineering (IChemE). It also received the Palm Oil Industry Award and the Sustainable Technology Award from Malaysian Chemical Engineers Association and the International Diamond Award for Quality Excellence from the European Society for Quality Research (ESQR). Information on these awards was widely covered by local major media, indicating its strong competitive ability.
