Abstract:
Perfluorocarbons (PFCs), such as CF4, have a strong greenhouse effect (GWP value of 7597) and an extremely long atmospheric lifespan (50000 years), listed as important greenhouse gas emissions reductions in <Kyoto Protocol>. CF4 is widely used in semiconductor manufacturing, power transmission and other fields, which is also one of the main by-products in the process of electrolytic aluminum and rare-earth metal smelting. Due to its highly symmetrical single carbon structure and strong C-F bond energy (550 kJ mol-1), CF4 is very stable. Treating CF4 generally requires harsh reaction condition and high energy consumption, producing complex toxic by-products, which has become a difficulty of concern in environmental field. Therefore, how to achieve efficient adsorption and activation of PFCs on the catalyst surface, control the release of toxic by-products and inhibit catalyst poisoning, is a key problem to be solved in the research of greenhouse gas governance. Professor Min Liu has focused on the environmental catalytic treatment technology of PFCs and achieved innovative results: (1) Revealing the essence of CF4 adsorption and activation on the catalyst surface, proposing a new concept of charge localization sites to enhance the CF4 adsorption and activation of on the catalyst surface; (2) Clarifying the catalytic decomposition process of CF4 and the mechanism of catalyst poisoning, and developing a new method to inhibit toxic by-products; (3) Regulating the intermediate of CF4 resource conversion process and forming a new technology for resource conversion of decomposition products (HF and CO2).
