Overview

The College offers a doctoral program in Environmental Science and Engineering, a postdoctoral research station, and a professional master’s program in Resources and Environment, establishing a complete talent training system covering undergraduate, master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral education.

Closely aligned with the national ecological civilization initiative and the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality strategy, the College has developed an integrated training model featuring basic research, technological innovation and engineering application. It focuses on distinctive research directions including environmental pollution processes and methodologies, pollution control and remediation technologies, ecotoxicology and environmental health, functional environmental materials and green energy, as well as resources and environmental management and policies. It is committed to cultivating top-tier talents in the environmental field with solid theoretical foundations, outstanding innovation capabilities and global vision.

In terms of training mechanisms, the College adopts a supervisor responsibility system combined with team-based training. Postgraduate students are encouraged to participate in major research projects such as national key R&D programs and projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and conduct cutting-edge research on national and provincial research platforms.

Interdisciplinary integration is highly emphasized. The College collaborates closely with disciplines including materials science, chemistry, biology and management, and offers specialized courses such as Environmental Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, and Carbon Neutrality Technologies.

For international exchanges, joint education programs have been established with world-leading universities such as the University of Leeds and the National University of Singapore. Postgraduate students are supported to attend international academic conferences and participate in global research cooperation.

Meanwhile, the College adheres to industry-university-research collaborative education. It builds internship bases with leading environmental enterprises to promote the transformation of research achievements and comprehensively enhance students’ practical capabilities in addressing complex environmental challenges.

Graduates are widely employed by universities, research institutions, environmental authorities, international organizations and well-known enterprises. They have grown into key researchers, technical specialists and management professionals in the environmental sector, continuously contributing to China’s ecological civilization development and global sustainable development with the strengths of the University.

Experimental Practice Teaching Center

Experimental Practice Teaching Center of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering (SESE), the establishment of which was approved in 2018, is a teaching platform specifically designed for experiments and other practices of undergraduates and postgraduates.

Experimental Practice Teaching Center adopts “1+N” management model, namely 1 basic experiment platform and 5 professional ones for water, gas, solid, soil, and noise respectively to provide teaching services of experiments and other practices for undergraduates and postgraduates. After the rebuilding of Weida, the Center has moved into the redecorated building, occupying about 1,400 m2 with more than 500 sets of equipment and the total asset over 15 million yuan. Now, 3 full-time staffs including 2 experiment teachers and a senior one, and 15 part-time teachers work here. The Center has provided services for 4 professional experiment courses, 3 practice courses, 2 platform experiment courses, and 1 general course with the average number of person-hours per year over 30,000.

Experimental Practice Teaching Center adheres to the idea of the balanced development of knowledge, capability and quality. With focus on the talent training objectives of “foundation consolidation, practice emphasis, capability improvement, and quality development”, the Centre has profoundly improved the quality of basic experiments, intensified engineering technical practices, and refined specialized course design and training programs for large-scale design experiments. So far, the Center has been built into an engineering practice teaching base that provides comminatory training of the engineering basis, advanced technologies, all-round developments, and innovative practices, which is characteristic of modular teaching methods, for all teachers and students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
