Adhering to the philosophy of pursuing excellence, the College vigorously promotes internationalization and builds all-round connections with world-class universities. It has established long-term and stable cooperative ties with more than ten renowned overseas institutions, including the University of Leeds, University College London, University of Waterloo, National University of Singapore, Tohoku University and Mahidol University. Drawing on advanced experience of collaborative education at home and abroad, the College innovates working approaches to advance international talent training through diversified channels. The China-Japan-Korea Postgraduate Education Cooperation Program in Energy and Environment, led by the College, has been selected as a pilot project of the Ministry of Education’s “Campus Asia” Initiative. The College actively builds international exchange platforms and hosts a series of high-profile international conferences and academic seminars, such as the 11th International Conference on Water Resources and Environment (WRE 2025) and the China Pavilion Side Event at COP29 (2024). These efforts greatly enhance the College’s reputation and influence at home and abroad.
Overview
International Institutes
Founded in 1968 under the initiative and support of UNESCO, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) is a global non-governmental alliance of national and regional engineering organizations. Headquartered in Paris, France, it is the world’s largest international engineering organization with extensive global influence. As a core specialized committee of WFEO, the Committee on Engineering and the Environment (CEE) focuses on leveraging environmental engineering technologies, applications and demonstrations to advance sustainable development. It prioritizes the delivery of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 11–15) and demonstrates WFEO‑CEE’s commitment and contributions to global sustainable development. Since 2023, the CEE Secretariat has been hosted by the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. At the 2025 WFEO General Assembly, Professor Geng Yong from the School was officially elected Chair of WFEO‑CEE. This milestone marks a new height for the University’s academic influence and global governance engagement in the field of environmental engineering.
Jointly supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the SJTU-UNIDO Joint Institute for Green Growth aims to build a high-level interdisciplinary innovation base, a top-tier research and think tank platform, and an international exchange and cooperation hub. Focusing on green growth, circular economy, resource efficiency, environmental management and policy analysis, the Institute features extensive international collaboration. It keeps abreast of global development trends by participating in UN projects and conducts multilateral cooperation with Europe, the United States, Japan and other regions. In partnership with the UNIDO Shanghai Investment and Technology Promotion Office, it has established a sustainable technology application center. The joint efforts advance industrial green transformation and eco-industrial park development in the Yangtze River Delta, and promote coordinated regional sustainable development.
